Monica Kung - Switzerland
“I attended the Summer Program in Sligo for 2 weeks.

The classes were very enjoyable. I can recall we once had to write our own plot and act the part afterwards. The whole act was also filmed. It was great fun and a challenge because you had to think and be imaginative, where everyone gave their own ideas. In the end there was a story made up by us all and so it was great fun to act it. I got to know the other students in my group fairly well and we had great craic (an Irish expression I learned) most of the time.

I met a lot of young people of different nationalities. It was interesting for me to experience the different mentalities from all the different countries. I spent most of my time with Russian, Spanish and Italian girls. We got to know each other better in the afternoons when we had activities, which were enjoyable and interesting. We even met in our free time to go shopping and to go for a drink together. We still keep in contact through MSN.
We got to see some of the countryside in the afternoons. Once we went for a walk in the mountains. The view up there was awesome!
We also went surfing or scuba-diving in Strandhill and at the weekends we had the opportunity to go to a big city like Dublin, Galway or Belfast. There was a wide range of activities so everyone got to do what they liked.

Before I went to Sligo last summer I had already known a bit of the Irish culture but this time I discovered the beauty of the language, the Irish accent and saw more of the country. I have Irish roots from my mother’s side so I felt very much at home over there.
The teaching staff was very friendly and helpful so I wasn’t afraid to ask a question. My teachers were all quite young and were from different English-speaking countries, like Ireland and America.”

“I really enjoyed my stay in Sligo. I have been there twice. When I arrived the first time, I was a bit nervous. I knew there would not be anyone who spoke Russian, but everything was marvelous.

The activities were so exciting and I enjoyed every minute of the course. I was very happy when my parents allowed me to go there the following summer. I knew that I would make new friends from other countries and I still get in contact with some of them and I am thinking about travelling to see them.

During my time in Sligo, I learned a lot about Irish culture. I became acquainted with Celtic music and I really enjoyed it. The lessons of Irish culture (Irish dancing and language) broadened my knowledge of the world.
It was an experience of a lifetime and I will never forget it.

“What can I say about a gorgeous country? What can l say about fantastic people? I can’t explain with words everything I have experienced in Sligo, but I will try:

I think staying in Sligo for the summer is a really good experience for everybody because you meet people all over the world, whose culture is completely different from yours. This helps you improve the way you behave, because you have to be more tolerant and friendly, and it makes you learn about different cultures.
In my case, I am really happy about being in touch with three Italians and a Swiss.

When I went to Ireland for the first time, four years ago, I fell in love with this town.
The people are very nice and really friendly. Last summer, I totally felt part of the Irish culture. The people at the school, they are fantastic: They are always worried about you and they do all their best to improve your stay in Sligo. Different activities are organized like treasure hunting, Irish dancing, surfing, horse riding. I never would have tried those activities if I had not gone to study in Sligo.”
